Fractals

"Many important spatial patterns of Nature are either irregular or fragmented to such an extreme degree that ... classical geometry ... is hardly of any help in describing their form. ... I hope to show that it is possible in many cases to remedy this absence of geometric representation by using a family of shapes I propose to call fractals -- or fractal sets." [Mandelbrot, "Fractals," 1977]

I've had an interest in fractals for a while now, although I can't remember where I first heard of them. That's not to say I understand them, but I love looking at computer generated fractals...the colors and shapes are hypnotizing. There are several programs you can download that create them without having to know a thing about them.

On this page I'll post some I've created...or have yet to create. Two are here already: the sparkly backgrounds are fractals. Here are a few others I've generated with the program Fractal eXtreme.

Below is a beautiful book on fractals by someone who is sometimes called the father of fractals, Benoit B. Mandelbrot. The cover alone is worth buying it for.
